Elaeocarpus reticulatus (Blue Berry Ash)

It is an ideal tree for large or small gardens that are situated from protected sea level sites to gardens at higher altitudes. Can be grown for its profuse floral display, fruit and foliage qualities. It also grows well in large tubs or containers. These trees can be pruned, making them an excellent hedging plant.

A great feature of this species is the round-oval fruits. These are a stunning shade of bright blue, and resemble small olives. The most commonly used name of Blueberry Ash is derived from the fruits, which attract birds like the Regent Bowerbird that collect them for their blue colour. Other birds that eat these fruits are Wonga Pigeons, Crimson Rosellas, Figbirds and White Headed Pigeons.

Straight smooth trunk with slightly buttressed roots extending to a canopy of shiny, dark green serrated leaves that provide a perfect contrast to the profusion of white to pink, fringed flowers that appear in summer. The flowers have an interesting aniseed fragrance that pervades the tree. The new growth is an attractive red-pinkish colour.
